Claire Partington: “Medea is a rather brutal representation of a woman. She is a popular subject in art history. I wanted to make Medea a strong and independent woman. In this image, Medea has the fleece (golden fleece) for herself and the Golden fleece is a sheepskin jacket. She has the bones of her victim behind her. ”

Medea is based on the character of Medea from the Greek myths. She's a sorceress and she used her magic to help Jason conquer the Golden Fleece. Jason had taken the Argonauts Tour to conquer the Golden Fleece and thus get the throne of Iolcus, but when he returned with the Golden Fleece, Pelias refused to relinquish the throne. Medea retaliated against him.

She slaughtered an old ram, cut it into pieces, and threw it into a kettle of boiling water, and added all kinds of magic herbs. After some time a young lamb jumped out of the kettle. The daughters of Pelias, who witnessed this miracle, asked Medea to rejuvenate their father too. She agreed, and at her insistence, the daughters murdered their father and threw him in the cauldron. But Medea left Pelias dead. Jason and Medea had two sons, but after ten years, Jason fell in love with Creusa. Jason claimed he wanted to marry the king's daughter to give their sons a good future. Heartbreak drives Medea mad. She poisons her husband's bride-to-be, after which she murders her own children in a fit of madness.
