----------
Kate Bryan, Global Curator for Ned’s Club and The Ned, is proud to present the first standalone pop-up exhibition at the private members club, presenting the work of one of the stars of The Ned Art Collection, Sarah Maple.

Known for work which takes an ironic approach to matters of feminism, racism, the nature of art and identity politics, Maple will present one of her most brilliant projects to date.

The installation Labour of Love combines over 650 individual wall and floor based works and makes an urgent statement about motherhood, unpaid labour and the work feminism still has to do.

Maple recorded her motherhood by hand finishing a photo of herself and her baby representing each feed over a 3 month period. Each piece us unique, oscillating between gentle, funny, angry and frustrated.

Raising a child is seen as a female task, not a real job. Thus unpaid and undervalued. Addressing this and rectifying the situation is the unfinished work of feminism.”

The installation packs a real punch, being both statistical and personal, a self-portrait and a universal one. It will speak to all genders, ages and parental status because the issue here affects us all either indirectly or directly. Sarah has taken her practice into something of a taboo area in the artworld – artist mothers are usually silent about how impossible the task of raising a child and staying creative and commercially viable is. The Ned Art Collection has always been women-led and unafraid to have these kind of conversations.”
Kate Bryan

By the time a woman’s first child is 12, she is paid, on average, 33% less than a man. Conversely becoming a father actually gives men’s earnings a boost. It has always struck me as a peculiar contradiction that if a woman chooses not to have children, and avoid this fate, she is looked upon with pity or confusion. Becoming a mother is what women are supposed to do. It’s our life’s purpose. But why is it that any work predominantly associated as ‘Women’s work’ is considered ‘other’ – it’s unimportant, disregarded and not valued. Not even by women?”.

The House of Ruinart is unlike any other. It was the first established House of Champagne in 1729 and inspired by the intuition of a monk well ahead of his time. Chardonnay is the very soul of Ruinart. The grape, mainly harvested from the Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims terroirs, is at the heart of all our cuvee.
