Popland wordt 5 – en jij bent uitgenodigd!

De Franse pop-surrealist Ciou cureert voor de vijfde keer Popland bij KochxBos Gallery. Tijdens de opening zijn verschillende kunstenaars aanwezig, grijp je kans om Alexandra Lukaschewitz, Chuck Sperry, Hazel Ang, Malojo, Peter ter Mors en curator Ciou te ontmoeten!
Popland brengt het werk samen van 19 opkomende en toonaangevende internationale kunstenaars uit de levendige wereld van de Pop Surrealism-beweging, een stroming die ontstond in de late twintigste eeuw en het fantastische vermengt met het alledaagse, het speelse met het diepzinnige.
De werken bevatten vaak fantasierijke en speelse verhalen, verweven met satire en kritiek op sociale, culturele en consumentistische thema’s.
Pop-surrealistische kunst put regelmatig uit diverse subculturen en staat bekend om haar hoge mate van technische vaardigheid en oog voor detail.
Net als hun verzamelaars en fans komen de kunstenaars uit alle hoeken van de wereld. Ook deze vijfde editie is samengesteld door de Franse kunstenaar Ciou. Naast haar eigen werk, zijn er werken te zien van kunstenaars uit onder andere Japan, Hongkong, Australië, Spanje, de Verenigde Staten, Nederland en Duitsland.
De prominente positie van Ciou binnen deze scene maakte deze internationale selectie mogelijk, aldus Koch van de galerie:
“Dankzij Ciou kunnen we het werk van bijvoorbeeld Creature Creature (Australië) tonen. Zonder haar aanbeveling hadden zij waarschijnlijk hun werk niet naar Nederland gestuurd.” Doordat Popland voortbouwt op het netwerk van gevestigde naam Ciou, krijgen bezoekers toegang tot exclusieve werken en een directe inkijk in de actuele ontwikkelingen binnen de beweging.
Ciou legde de kunstenaars geen specifiek thema op; ze waren vrij om te maken wat ze wilden. Toch vormen de werken een samenhangend geheel, verbonden door gedeelde invloeden. Ciou noemt anime, popcultuur en volkskunst als belangrijke inspiratiebronnen.
“Het is fascinerend om te zien hoe Aziatische kunstenaars Amerikaanse invloeden interpreteren, en hoe Europese kunstenaars zich verhouden tot Japanse kunst. Het is een continue cyclus van inspiratie - een perfecte cirkel.” - Ciou
Thematisch zijn sommige werken politiek en maatschappelijker geladen dan je misschien zou verwachten van een genre dat zijn wortels heeft in popcultuur en fantasie. Dat sluit goed aan bij de reguliere programmering van KochxBos Gallery, waar popcultuur en humor vaak worden gekoppeld aan politieke en emanciperende boodschappen.

French pop surrealist Ciou curates Popland for the fifth time for KochxBos Gallery. Several artists will be present at the opening, don’t miss your chance to meet Alexandra Lukaschewitz, Chuck Sperry, Hazel Ang, Malojo, Peter ter Mors, and curator Ciou!
Popland brings together the work of 19 emerging and leading international artists from the vibrant world of Pop Surrealism, a movement that took root in the late 20th century, blending the fantastical with the everyday, the playful with the profound.
The works often contain fantastical and playful narratives, interwoven with elements of satire and social, cultural, and consumerist critique. Pop Surrealist art frequently draws from various subcultures and is known for its high level of technical skill and detail.
Like its collectors and fans, the artists in this movement come from all over the world. Just like the previous four editions, Popland V was curated by French artist Ciou. Alongside her own work, the exhibition features artists from Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, Spain, the United States, the Netherlands, and Germany.
Ciou's prominence within the scene helped make this international selection possible, says Koch at the gallery: “We're able to show Creature Creature’s work (Australia) thanks to Ciou’s recommendation. Without her, it’s unlikely they would have sent their work to the Netherlands.” Because Popland taps into the insider network of well-established artist Ciou, visitors get access to exclusive works and a direct look into current developments within the movement.
Ciou didn’t impose a specific theme on the artists; they were free to create whatever they wanted. Still, the works form a cohesive whole, united by shared influences. Ciou points to anime, pop culture, and folk art as key inspirations.
“It’s fascinating to see how artists from Asia interpret American influences, and how European artists approach Japanese art. It’s a continuous cycle of inspiration - a perfect circle.” – Ciou
Thematically, some of the works are more political and socially engaged than one might expect from a genre inspired by pop culture and fantasy. This aligns well with the regular programming at KochxBos Gallery, where pop culture and humor are often paired with political and emancipatory messages.
