Bethany de Forest's objective is to show a “realistic” and slight absurdist imaginary world, in which one can supposedly wander around. Creating the illusion that what we see is life-size, an actual place we can visit.
She photographs with a pinhole camera, a box without a lens or diaphragm, just a small round hole the size of the tip of a pin. Combined with her models, the effect is amazing. These miniature worlds seem almost lifelike, and there’s always a twist, which is what makes De Forest’s work so fascinating.
It’s like being in Alice’s Wonderland, surrounded by lifesize insects and giant flowers. Look closer and you’ll discover all kinds of surprises: pollard willows made of rhubarb stalks, sugar cubes masquerading as marble blocks, and raw ham as marbled stone in a cathedral with stained-meat windows. De Forest optically manipulates these materials by adjusting the light and the angle. At the same time the world she creates in her landscapes, cities and palaces seems kind of natural. Butterflies flutter about, cars race past, not to mention the more bizarre scenes. The absurd situations and the profusion of visual imagery entices you deep into De Forest’s world and tempts you to explore ever further.

Bethany de Forest creëert al 25 jaar de meest kleurrijke en fantastische landschappen. Door het vervreemdende oog van haar pinhole camera zien we suikerpaleizen, frambozenvlaktes en gambaparadijzen. Om dit jubileum te markeren presenteren KochxBos Publishers 4 juni hun vijfde artbook: een 144-pagina’s tellend overzicht van de Forest’s wonderbaarlijkste scheppingen van de afgelopen 25 jaar, ‘Funky Landscapes’. Aansluitend exposeert KochxBos Gallery hoogtepunten uit haar oeuvre en een aantal spectaculaire nieuwe werken.
Al bladerend ga je op reis langs soms sprookjesachtige en vaak surrealistische voorstellingen. Levensgrote insecten en enorme bloemen in uitbundige landschappen worden afgewisseld door interieurs met soms eindeloze galerijen of van vlees gemaakte bouwstenen. In de vaak absurde wereld die De Forest weergeeft, is er altijd wel humor of een knipoog te vinden. Het is allemaal fotografie, niets is getekend, geschilderd of gephotoshopt. Alle beelden heeft De Forest gemaakt met een pinhole-camera: een camera zonder objectief, maar met een minuscuul gaatje (de pinhole) dat als ‘lens’ fungeert en de voorstelling op lichtgevoelig materiaal projecteert.
De techniek van de pinhole is een warme, altijd-verrassende tegenhanger van de perfectie van hedendaagse digitale fotografie. De onscherpte, vignetering en kleurzwemen geven een eigen vervreemding aan de afbeeldingen. Juist daarom geeft De Forest de voorkeur aan de pinhole. Zo kan ze het gevoel van haar werelden het beste vastleggen. En zoals ze zelf zegt: de pinhole is een camera ‘waar ze zelf in past’. Waarmee ze bedoelt dat ze de pinhole camera - soms niet groter dan een luciferdoosje - in een relatief kleine enscenering of maquette kan zetten en zo een beeld krijgt alsof ze er zelf in staat.
