Dark Matter: A positive dialogue in a whirlpool of colour

KochxBos Gallery has a passion for artists who tell their stories through powerful compositions, preferably with a dark edge. For this reason, we are thrilled to present Martine Johanna’s Dark Matter, her first solo show in the Netherlands since 2016.

Martine Johanna’s work is largely autobiographical. Using colour, form, and composition as language, she investigates the role of women within a patriarchal culture, beauty, and female adolescence. Oppression, inner worlds, and femininity are themes recurring in her wordless communication.

"After the loss of my mother, I started questioning my motivation.” Johanna explains Dark Matter, “Never before have I realised, that all my life as a ‘difficult child’, I have been searching for my parents' recognition. Who do you become when the people that you seek validation from, suddenly disappear? I had to find the right motivation within myself, deliver my own affirmation. I had to leave regret and sorrow behind me."

“When I started working, large, threatening, abstract shapes of darkness appeared. As a child I once made friends with the shadows in my room, and today, in a similar manner, I enter a relationship with all aspects of myself that I find unpleasant. These forms create a positive dialogue, with the introspective (child) woman and her experiences, in swirling colour masses. Soft pink is often present as the comfort of security and innocence. "

"My vision, the creative process and its ritual, are for me the most important aspects of my work.” Martine says about her method, “I photograph the models myself, and digitally arrange and extract the compositions, but use them as a rough example, with the final result always being different. I mainly paint with acrylics in layers and lines, in a saturated colour spectrum."

Martine Johanna is an artist mostly known for her vivid paintings with both figurative and abstract elements. Her autobiographic works, seemingly light hearted, explore the duality between youthful naivety and anxiety-riddled adulthood. The often female figures, fierce but fragile, crowd the compositions and occupy the majority of the space gazing distractedly into the beyond. Each of the delicately rendered figures convey a sense of full immersion within their own “internal psychic landscape.”

The work is imbued with a mysterious narrative and sensation of knowing that each character in the work has a full and complex history that the viewer can never fully comprehend. The paintings have a signature prismatic palette, visually stimulating and playful while expressing an underlying sense of uncertainty and unrest. Martine Johanna has had international success exhibiting extensively in the Netherlands and abroad. A background in fashion design has influenced her depiction and ease with the female figure. Inspiration for her work include a mixture of childhood and autobiographical memories and experiences, documentaries on human nature, independent films and history. Martine Johanna lives and works in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Een positieve dialoog in kolkende kleurenmassa's

KochxBos Gallery heeft een voorliefde voor kunstenaars die hun verhaal vertellen in krachtige composities, bij voorkeur met een donker randje. Daarom verwelkomen we met grote trots Martine Johanna in onze galerie. Dark Matter is Martine's eerste Nederlandse solo-expositie sinds 2016.

Het werk van Martine Johanna is voornamelijk autobiografisch. Terugkerende thema’s zijn onder andere vrouwelijke adolescentie, schoonheid, de beklemmende patriarchale cultuur, innerlijke leefwerelden en kleur, vorm en compositie als taal. De thema’s die ze onderzoekt zijn onder andere vrouw zijn in een patriarchale samenleving, afwijkend gedrag en woordenloze communicatie.

Over Dark Matter vertelt Martine Johanna: "Na het verlies van mijn moeder kwam ik terecht in een vraag van motivatie. Nooit eerder had ik mij gerealiseerd dat ik als “moeilijk kind” al mijn leven lang op zoek was naar de erkenning van mijn ouders. Wie ben je als de mensen bij wie je bevestiging zoekt ineens wegvallen? Ik moest de juiste motivatie in mezelf vinden, mijn eigen bevestiging uit mezelf halen. Ik moest spijt en verdriet achter me laten."

"Toen ik aan de slag ging, ontstonden er grote dreigende abstracte duistere vormen. Zoals ik als kind ooit vriendschappen sloot met de schaduwen in mijn kamer. Zo ga ik ook een relatie aan met alle aspecten in mijzelf die ik niet als prettig ervaar. Deze vormen gaan een positieve dialoog aan met de in zichzelf gekeerde (kind)vrouw en haar belevingswereld in kolkende kleurenmassa’s. Het zachte roze is vaak aanwezig als het comfort van veiligheid en onschuld."

Over haar werkwijze zegt Martine: "Mijn visie, het maakproces en het ritueel daarvan is voor mij het belangrijkst in mijn werk. Ik fotografeer zelf modellen die ik daarna digitaal in composities zet en abstraheer, deze houd ik aan als grof voorbeeld, het uiteindelijke resultaat wordt altijd anders. Ik schilder voornamelijk met acryl in lagen en lijnen in een breed verzadigd kleurspectrum."

KochxBos Gallery is in 2005 opgericht door Esther Koch en Hans Bos. De galerie toont werk van geselecteerde kunstenaars die hen persoonlijk inspireren. Martine Johanna is beeldend kunstenaar, vooral bekend om haar kleurrijke schilderijen met abstracte en figuratieve elementen. Haar autobiografische werk, schijnbaar luchtig, verkent de dualiteit tussen jeugdige naïviteit en met angst-doorzeefde volwassenheid. De delicaat geschilderde figuren delen een gevoel van volledige onderdompeling in hun eigen “interne psychische landschap.” Martine Johanna heeft internationaal succes en exposeert regelmatig in de VS.
